Plank tables in solid wood — handbuilt in Denmark

The craft

Bordmanden is a small business, driven by a passion for wood and joinery. I build the tables myself, one at a time, and it is the love of the work that drives it more than the numbers. The workshop is not a fancy place — it is where I can take the time the joinery deserves.

I take pride in getting the work right. A table should not just look good on the day it is collected — it has to last, and the solution has to suit the wood it is made from. So I take the time it takes, and I do not cut corners along the way. I stand behind what I make, and I collect happy customers: a table from me should be one you are glad of for many years to come.

And it is my own contribution to reusing wood rather than buying new, and to saving the CO2 that comes with it.

I am a trained craftsman with many years of experience with wood and professional tools. This is how I work on every table:

  1. pick the wood by hand

  2. use stronger joints between the planks

  3. sand between rounds and again at the end, with very fine grit and steel wool last

  4. minimise the risk of the wood lifting

  5. control humidity and temperature in the showroom and the workshop

  6. have personally made every single table that leaves my workshop

One complaint

In all the time I have been selling tables, I have had one complaint. I accommodated it, because what matters most to me is that my customers are happy. If you buy a table from me, you can expect good service and good quality.

Top and trestles

Every table is a tabletop and a pair of trestles. The trestles are IKEA LERBERG, and they come with the table. They have been discontinued by IKEA and have become sought after since. But they are a very small part of the price of the table. What you pay for is the top: the wood and the work in it.

What the table stands on is a personal matter, and there is a lot to it. Many use trestles from HAY, others choose table legs, typically tapered or round. It depends on the room, on what the table stands with, and on the transition down to the floor. If the table later moves somewhere new, other legs may suit it better there. If you would rather find your own, simply leave the trestles here and get a small discount on the price.

Cutting to size and custom measurements

A table can be cut to your own measurements. Write with the size you need, and I will tell you what is possible — it depends on the joints. Cutting to size is free of charge.

  • A table that has to be cut to size is paid for in advance.
  • A table cut to your measurements cannot be returned.

How we measure

The dimensions are always given in the same order: width × depth × height, in centimetres. Width is the long side of the table. Depth is the short side, from front edge to back edge. Height is from the floor to the tabletop.

One of the tables seen at an angle from the corner, with arrows for width, depth and height.
W 124 x D 65 cm is a table 124 cm wide and 65 cm deep.

When the table is finished

The top simply rests on the trestles and lifts off, so even a large table can be taken home — a desk especially. Here you can read how it gets to you.
